Story of Morley’s Brunswick Arms

I WOULD like to add a couple of facts to Mr Kaye’s interesting story of the Brunswick public house, known locally as “The Brunnie.”

It was no doubt originally given the name The Brunswick Arms because the Victorians were entranced with stories of the exploits of the Duke of Brunswick (1771-1815) and his regiment the “Black Brunswickers” (so called because of their all black uniforms) fighting the French in the Waterloo campaign, during which he was killed in battle.

Consequently for many years afterwards establishments and places in this country were given the name Brunswick.

Another of the landlords of the public house was the professional wrestler Ernest Baldwin who helped train Jimmy Saville to also become a wrestler.
