THE sun shone, bands played, trade was brisk and children could be heard squealing with excitement as they braved the big fun-fair rides in Scatcherd Park.
In short – Morley Feast was a big success, providing a weekend of entertainments to suit the whole family.
While Roger Tuby's funfair set up in the park for three days, there was a street market on Saturday, and on Sunday the third Morley March and Hymn Tune Contest saw 10 bands parading the length of Queen Street.
The Mayor of Morley Shirley Varley said she had a great weekend, that the town centre was 'buzzing' on Saturday and that Sunday's brass band event was 'wonderful'.
She thanked Morley Chamber of Trade and the town centre management for organising the market, and the Morley Lions, Geoff Fowler and the Morley entertainment sub-committee who planned the band competition.
Coun Varley added: "A big thank you to all those who organised it, those who came along to be involved but also to those people who came to support the event, for without you it could not have been such a success."
Contest controller Geoff Fowler said: "This was the third annual contest and it ran like clockwork.
"The weather was brilliant, the crowds came and the music from the bands was excellent."
Ten bands took part, including Marsden who won for the third year running, narrowly beating Silk Brass.
Meltham and Meltham Mills were third overall and prizes were also awarded to Drighlington, Grange Moor, Garforth Brass, Tingley Brass and Shirland Training.
An additional prize this year of a trophy for the youngest player on the day, went to 11-year-old Isaac Dunsford, the tenor horn player of Tingley Brass.
Mr Fowler added: "On behalf of Morley and District Lions, our sponsors and, I am sure, the supporters who came and supported the event, we would like to thank all of the bands for a great contest."
Individuals and businesses wanting to sponsor next year's event should contact Mr Fowler on 2530719 or Lion Roy Field on 2530571.
