AERIAL acrobatics take practice if they are to be carried off with the magical ease and grace expected by audiences looking forward to seeing Monkey! at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from June 14 to July 12.
Monkey! is a stage version of the Chinese legend that achieved world wide cult status in the 1970s and 80s after it was turned into a Japanese television series.

Now it has been bought to the stage by a talented group of eight actors who have experience on the stage as well as in the circus and in acrobatics.

Adapted by Colin Teevan directly from the 16th century tale, Journey to the West, this bold staging promises to engage audiences of all ages with its epic tale, aerial acrobatics, zany humour and intriguing characters.

Monkey (played by Jami Reid-Quarrell) is a very modern hero, anarchic and impulsive but true to his friends.

Naturally disobedient, his punishments from Buddha come thick and fast, not least being trapped in a mountain for 500 years.

His only means of redemption is to accompany the monk Tripitaka (played by Wendy Hesketh) on an epic journey to the Western Heavens to collect the teachings of Buddha and return them to China.

With the help of his companions Pigsy (Mike Goodenough) and the fish dragon Sandy (Craig Gazey), Monkey fights off evil attacks by multitudes of demons as they journey in pursuit of their goal.

The aerial spectacle and panto-esque moments promise to thrill children of seven and over while the more profound message about Buhhdism and life may give food for thought to adults in the audience.

Tickets cost from £11 to £26.50 and are available from the box office on 213 7800 or by visiting www.wyp.org.uk
