ANYONE of a certain age (my age) will fondly remember the post tea-time treat that was the TV show Monkey.
Now, nearly 30 years after his televisual incarnation, the titular hero of Chinese legend has returned, this time in an utterly gobsmacking production at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Combining breathtaking acrobatics with impressive wire work, this stage production, directed and choreographed by Dominic Leclerc, tells the story of Monkey's epic spiritual journey across China alongside devout Buddist monk Tripitaka and faithful cohorts Pigsy and Sandy.

Jamie Reid-Quarrell has all the mischievous cheek of Monkey with some added acrobatic talents while Wendy Hesketh commands the full attention of the audience with her incredibly graceful wire work, which is just a joy to watch.

Matt Costain (as Buddha, Yama King of Death) leaves the audience stunned with his acrobatics, in particular when he appears to defy physical probability by hanging on to a trapeze with just the back of his head!

It's rare that you see something in a theatre that is just so ridiculously entertaining that you want to watch it all over again as soon as the cast finish their curtain call, but Monkey! really is that good.

It'll have you crying with laughter and gasping in amazement. A true theatrical pick-me-up, it will leave you coming out of the theatre with a warm glow inside.
