THE City of Leeds Youth Orchestra is set to make its return to Leeds Town Hall later this month with a varied programme of works by British and American composers.
Conducted by Dougie Scarfe, the concert, on Saturday, February 27 at 7.30pm, will include Walton's Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, Barber's Adagio For Strings, Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Bernstein and Walton's Viola Concerto, featuring 17-y
ear old Alex Mitchell.

The City of Leeds Youth Orchestra (CLYO) is made up of musicians aged between 14 and 19 and maintains a reputation as one of the leading ensembles of its kind in the country.

For more than 40 years it has given generations of young players an opportunity to express their musical talents, performing throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.

Barber's Adagio for Strings is perhaps the most recognisable of pieces on the programme, having been used on the soundtracks of the films Platoon and The Elephant Man and also been sampled in various popular dance tracks.

The concert also features the jazz rhythms and Latin-inspired melodies of the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, including Mambo, Cha-Cha and Somewhere.

Written as part of his score for the 1942 film The First of the Few, Walton's Spitfire Prelude and Fugue will be performed to mark the 70th anniversary of Battle of Britain, whilst his Viola Concerto will feature the orchestra's pincipal viola player Alex Mitchell.

Tickets are priced at £10 (£5 for under 18s, full-time students and unwaged).
