IN a break from their usual procedure the Leeds Festival organisers have announced the first acts for next year’s August bank holiday event at Bramham Park - and a band with links to the city will be featuring.

Recent Mercury Music prize winners Alt-J, who formed while at Leeds University, have been confirmed as headliners of the NME/ Radio 1 tent at next summer’s big music extravaganza.

The announcement caps an incredible year for the band after their debut album An Awesome Wave was released to critical acclaim and saw them become Radio 1 favourites. At this year’s festival they played to a packed Festival Republic tent.

Also on the bill for the 2013 festival will be Deftones, Sub Focus and Wiley’s hip-hop collective Boy Better Know.

Deftones will have a main stage slot while Sub Focus will headline the BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage and Boy Better Know will headline the BBC Radio 1 Xtra Stage, which will be a new feature at the 2013 event.

There are several changes planned for next year’s festival with three new stages.

Organiser Melvin Benn said: “This is a dynamic time for the festivals. Not only do we have a fresh look for next year, but we are also adding to the fans’ experience of the festival with the introduction of more stages and genres of music, which also inevitably means an increase in the number of artists playing across the weekend.

“The addition of the hip-hop stage and the extension of the dance line-up to a three day stage - whilst not losing the essence of what Reading and Leeds Festivals are about across the existing Main, NME/Radio 1, Festival Republic and Lock Up Stages - are the things that really excite me.”

No main stage headline acts have been announced yet with Black Sabbath, Blur and the Artic Monkeys among those rumoured to be in contention.

Tickets went on sale last Friday and for a limited period until December 31 will be sold at 2012 prices. Organisers are also introducing a £50 deposit scheme for 2013, which allows fans to guarantee a place at the festival early and pay the full balance before March 31, 2013.
