THE Easter Bunny led children and parents through the town centre in Morley's first Easter bonnet parade on Saturday.
Around 60 children braved wind and snow to show off their Easter bonnets and hats, decorated with feathers, chicks, rabbits and even a few sheep and tractors.

It was fantastic,“ said Paul Cockcroft, one of the organisers. “Absolutely superb and there were far more people there than I expected.”

Also leading the parade was the Mayor of Morley Coun Joyce Sanders who said: “It was fantastic, and to think we had all that snow!

“I thought, ‘what are we going to do?’ but we got a gazebo up out of the wind and we had 60 children so we paraded right up Queen Street as far as the Post Office and back, with everybody waving and clapping.

“We sang Hot Cross Buns outside Ainsleys and they bought out hot cross buns and biscuits for all the kids. The kids absolutely loved it.”

A team of judges from Morley Chamber of Trade then awarded large chocolate eggs to the creators of the best decorated bonnets and eggs.

But no-one went away empty handed as a former Morley councillor, Ian Gray, turned up with a donation of another 60 chocolate eggs.

Mr Cockcroft added: “We did a bit of a straw poll, asking people where they came from and found a lot of people had come from out of town because we were the only town having a large Easter bonnet parade.

“Everything like this does bring shoppers and visitors into the town and this is exactly the sort of thing we need to work on.”

He added that the event was such a success they are determined to make it an annual celebration.

And the Easter Bunny had a very busy weekend in the area as he was also seen out and about in Drighlington.

The village’s Easter egg hunt also proved a hugely popular event with plenty braving the icy conditions.
