TOMORROW marks the centenary of a tragic accident at the Iron Works in East Ardsley, which resulted in the loss of five lives and 13 others injured.
Just before 10am on Friday, August 28, 1908 there was a massive explosion at the number one furnace at the works, instantly killing two local men and sending a dozen more fleeing for their lives. The Morley Observer, dated September 4 1908, dedicated a full page detailing the suspected cause of the explosion, expert theories and eye witness accounts.
A commemorative postcard was published shortly after the incident picturing the five men who were killed and naming the 13 injured.
