THE finished statue of beloved comedian Ernie Wise will be lowered into place in Morley town centre this weekend.
A delicate operation to put the stone figure into its permanent position will begin at 9am on Sunday.

Ernie's statue, complete with top hat and cane, will be lowered into the raised flowerbed outside The Furniture Centre on Queen Street.

The location has been chosen as it is close to the former Pavilion theatre where he made his stage debut as a boy.

The statue is the work of Morley sculptor Melanie Wilks and she will be on-hand to oversee the operation, as will members of Morley Murals Society.

The statue will officially be unveiled by the comedian's widow, Doreen Wiseman, at a ceremony to be held within the next two weeks.

* See Wednesday's Observer & Advertiser for pictures from Sunday's placing of the statue and more details on the official unveiling.
