FRIENDS, family and admirers of a Morley footballing legend gathered on Friday to honour his memory and watch the opening of a garden and building named after him.
Eddie Le Huray was no mere footballer but the founder of Glen Juniors AFC, a children's football club that now boasts over 160 members and has over the years given thousands of children the opportunity to play.

Since Eddie died in December 2007 Glen Juniors AFC have been looking for a way to honour him so on Friday they held a ceremony at Glen Road to mark the dedication of a memorial garden and the renaming of the Glen Changing Rooms to the Eddie LeHuray Changing Rooms.

Club secretary Helen Morrell said on behalf of the club: "The whole event was really nice and special. It was such a lovely thing for Eddie because he died in December and people are soon forgotten but he put his life into the club.

"From 1974 to 2007 he never stopped thinking about Glen Juniors.

"He had retired but he was still involved, giving out trophies and doing the disco every year.

"We just felt it was really important to keep his memory going so that kids that come along in the future will know where the club came from, that it hasn't just always been there but that a lot of hard work has gone into it."

Among those who attended the event was Eddie's wife Margaret, son Robert and sister Violet Moody.

Margaret was the first person to sit on "Eddie's" bench, a stone seat carved with his name and the words, "Mr Glen Juniors".

The opening ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Morley, Coun Terry Grayshon and the Mayores, Coun Judith Elliott (MBI, Morley South)who, according to Helen, have supported the club for years and helped fund the memorial garden and bench.

Helen added that she was grateful to Leeds City Council for agreeing so quickly that the changing rooms be renamed in Eddie's honour.

Coun Christopher Beverley (BNP, Morley South), who also provided funds for the garden project, said: "I grew up on the Glen estate and I know what fantastic work Glen Juniors have done for the young people in our community over the years.

"I was delighted to have been able to support this project."
