REIN Road residents and councillors have welcomed a decision by planners in Leeds to reject an application to demolish four houses and replace them with an estate of 26 homes.
An application for 18 houses and eight flats for the busy road had been submitted by Lyndon Paul Homes, to the outrage of people living there.

But the developers have now been informed that if they do not withdraw the plans they will be refused pe
rmission by the council.

Mr Colin Bagshaw, of Rein Road Residents Association, said: “The developer had been told it is in his best interests to withdraw but he has until the end of September to make up his mind.

“The council is unhappy with the plans and wants to see major surgery on them. If they don’t withdraw and let them go through they will be rejected.”

Since hearing of the application in the summer the residents rallied around, held meetings on the application and wrote to Leeds City Council with their objections.

One resident, Alan Handforth, said the estate planned by Lyndon Paul Homes would increase the parking and traffic problems on an already very busy road and was out of character with the area.

Coun Tom Leadley (MBI, Morley North) who attended their meetings and advised residents on the planning process, also said he was concerned by the density of the development.

“We think the development is over intensive and out of character with Rein Road,” he said.

Planning officers in Leeds may have agreed as a spokesman for Leeds City Council said: “I can confirm the developer has been told that our planners are not happy with it and they can either withdraw it or it is likely to be refused because it represents over development and because of the impact on trees.”

Coun Chris Beverley (BNP, Morley South) added: “Having met with Rein Road residents to discuss this issue, it was clear to me that the vast majority of local people were opposed to this thoroughly inappropriate development.

“I made a formal objection along with a number of Rein Road residents based on the unsuitability of the development, and I was pleased to learn that Leeds City Council’s planning department appear to agree and have made it clear that the application will not be approved.”
