WHILE the stars of rugby league battle it out in Australia to win the World Cup, Newlands Primary School is already celebrating.
Year 6 pupils came out on top at the World Cup Tag Rugby Festival at the John Charles Centre for Sport on Monday.
The team, of three girls and seven boys, went head-to-head with nine other Leeds primary schools, winning the majority of their games to come out on top.
Each school adopted a country that is taking part in the main tournament down under, with Newlands embracing the identity of Ireland for the day, which was organised by Leeds City Council and Hunslet Hawks.
In the grand final Newlands faced East Ardsley Primary School – who were Fiji for the day – but with the support of their fellow year six pupils, Newlands proved they couldn't be beaten.
Team coach Tish Furness, who is also the school's caretaker, said: "All the children from year six were there with their banners, screaming and shouting I think we were the loudest there!.
"The team did really well and we are all proud of them. I'd like to say thank you to Seth Foster, Leeds City Council's rugby league coach, for a great event."
