Never has a pint tasted so good!

That was the gist of Stephen Gaughan’s thinking on New Year’s Day when he tasted his first alcoholic drink for a whole year.

Stephen went tee-total for the whole of 2014 to fundraise for children’s charity Dreams Come True after hearing about the plight of a five year-old girl called Aimee, who has a rare heart defect.

The charity, which aims to fulfil the dreams seriously ill youngsters, can now send Aimee on an amazing trip to DisneyWorld Florida with her parents next May, after Stephen raised just under £4,000 over the course of the year.

Stephen said: “It was nice to have a couple of pints on New Years Day. I took the Friday off work just in case I wasn’t feeling too good but I was OK.”

Asked how difficult it was to go dry for a year, Stephen said, “I had my moments.

“There was a wedding day where I had to drive everyone home drunk which wasn’t a great day!

“It did get to a point where it got easier, apart from times when everybody was going out and I was sat there thinking, ‘I’d love a drink now’.

“I was very lucky that England had a rubbish World Cup too!

“But I like to do stuff and to make a difference. I understand Aimee’s really excited to go and I know that she’s already got her Disney princess dress for the trip.”

And charitable Stephen is planning more fundraising for 2015, as he aims to complete a marathon in aid of a good cause.

Five year-old Aimee, who lives in the south of country, will be given a first-class trip to DisneyWorld with her family next year as a result of Stephen’s fundraising which was done specifically for her.
