A pervert who allowed others to gain access to his collection of more than 12,000 vile child porn images has been jailed.

Marc Barrett, 33, of Fairfax Avenue, Drighlington, was arrested following an operation by the Nation Crime Agency aimed at those who used online file sharing to distribute abusive images of children.

Leeds Crown Court heard officers executed a search warrant at Barrett’s family home in November this year and seized computer equipment.

Kate Bisset, prosecuting, told the court officers found more than 12,000 image and movies of children being abused. A total of 2,857 images were at level A - the most serious category of offending - and showed children as young as three years of age being horrifically abused. A total of 430 extreme pornographic images were also discovered which included bestiality.

Miss Bisset said other people were able to access and distribute the images.

Barrett pleaded guilty to three offences of making indecent images of children, three of distributing indecent images of children and two of possession of extreme pornography.

Helen Chapman, mitigating, said Barrett has no previous convictions and was deeply ashamed of what he had done and the shame he had brought on members of his family.

He said Barrett’s relationship with his girlfriend had ended as a result of the offences. Miss Chapman said her client had spent five weeks in custody on remand since his arrest and was determined never to offend again.

Jailing Barrett, judge Guy Kearl, QC, said: “Without a market there would be no child abuse and exploitation and that is your responsibility.

“You played your part in perpetuating the cycle of harm.”

Barrett was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.
