A local butcher has fulfilled a lifelong ambition by opening a new branch of his meat shop in his hometown of Morley.

Philip Bennett, who owns Bennett’s Butchers which has four outlets across Leeds, flung open the doors to the new shop on Queen Street on Saturday.

And there was a special treat for new customers as former Coronation Street actor Steven Arnold, better known to soap fans as legendary butcher Ashley Peacock, came to town to open the shop and help out on a busy first day.

Mr Bennett said: “It was very, very busy on Saturday and Steven went down a storm. He was great talking to the customers and they were all over him.”

Mayor Wyn Kidger and Coun Bob Gettings were also present to celebrate the big occasion.

Mr Bennett added: “ I went to Bruntcliffe School as a boy and it’s always been a dream for me to open for business here in Morley. All my family are Morley people and I haven’t seen as much of the town as I’d have liked to because I started work in Leeds Market at the age of 13, but to have all the people coming in on Saturday and recognising my name was fantastic!”
