The Elders and the Congregation of St Mary’s in the Wood United Reformed Church continued a tradition going back hundreds of years when they took turns to ring the pancake bell in Morley yesterday.

It is thought Morley’s pancake bell has been rung on Shrove Tuesday since at least the 1640s to signal the start of Lent. It also signalled a half-day holiday for apprentices and schoolchildren in Morley. The original bell, dated 1694, is no longer available following the fire of the church building in 2009, but the congregation and friends rang another bell on the church steps in Commercial Street to celebrate.
