AN “absolute gem of a school” has been awarded gold by Yorkshire in Bloom.
Judges visiting Fountain Primary School were bowled over by all they have achieved in two years to transform the grounds from a building site to a “delightful” area with “treasures around every corner”.
They praised caretaker David Fowler, the driving force behind the transformation, and everyone at the school for working as a team to achieve so much.
Mr Fowler said: “When we told the children there were as many cheers as there were in the Olympic stadium.
“They are really chuffed because almost every child in the school has planted something this year. It’s a whole school effort and runs from nursery up to year six.
“We have a wildlife area, bog garden, there are lots of tubs all round school and we have a massive allotment.
“There is a lot going on and the gardens are used for the curriculum as well, it is not just about enjoying ourselves, the children are learning as well.”
While delighted to be one of four Leeds schools to win gold, next year they are determined to get best in category.
