A team of novice canoeists from Aire Valley Homes are gearing up for a huge challenge.
The Aire Valley Vikings, Mike Holdsworth, Mark Gray, Phil Arnett and Jamie Sampler will row the full length of the Leeds and Liverpool canal over three days, starting on September 23 - a total of 127 miles to raise money for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre at St James’s Hospital. Mike said: “We have all purchased our own equipment and funded the challenge ourselves and are aiming to raise around £20,000 for the centre. We have currently raised £15,225.”
Throughout the year the team, who work from Navigation House in Hunslet, have taken part in a number of other fundraising events including a Malteser eating challenge.
Mike said: “The majority of people at some point in their lives are touched by cancer in one way or another either directly themselves or someone they know or love.
“We want to make a little difference and need as much support as possible.”
