POND dipping, picnics and play were the order of the day when Churwell Action Group Environmental Volunteers (CAGEV) held their big summer picnic in Daffil Wood.

The sun shone down as dozens of families settled down on picnic blankets for an afternoon of relaxation and socialising around the new pond which was created earlier this year.

One of the organisers, Joanna Coultous, said: “Thanks to all those who came along to the picnic. It was lovely to see Jubilee Corner covered in picnic mats and people having a good time.”

She added: “We were so lucky with the weather as it was possibly the hottest afternoon of the summer!”

People tried pond dipping, made wreaths and willow baskets with the help of Melvyn Rutter and chatted over an exhibition of model steam engines.

Members of CAGEV are now planning their next event and are looking to local people to help them.

Chur-Art from October 20-21 will be an exhibition of photographs and art taken in and inspired by Churwell’s flourishing woods and surrounding areas.

These pictures can be of anything related to the woods, from a beautiful sunset or swathe of bluebells to a snapshot of people having fun at one of CAGEV’s events.

Paintings and sketches of the woods are also welcome and all submissions should be e-mailed to daffilwoods@yahoo.co.uk by October 14.
