CCTV to target M621 yobs

SPY cameras will be placed on motorway footbridges after a number of incidents of missiles being thrown at cars.

In one incident earlier this month, a 25 year old driver was injured after he was hit by a brick that smashed through his windscreen after being dropped from a bridge over the M621.

The man was driving westbound underneath the footbridge at junction four when the incident happened at about 11.45pm on Saturday, October 13.

He was hit in the chest, but managed to keep control of his vehicle, bringing it to a stop safely on the hard shoulder where he was attended to by police paramedics.

Police said the incident could have had far more serious consequences to the driver and other road users.

Highways Agency CCTV cameras will now be directed specifically at the walkways during off-peak periods.

Officers will also be carrying out extra patrols in a bid to deter yobs.

Sgt Sam Greaves of Holbeck Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “There have been a number of incidents over the past couple of weeks where items, including bricks and bottles, have been thrown from motorway bridges across the south Leeds area.

“There have been a number of vehicles damaged but, so far, no-one has been seriously injured. But it’s only a matter of time.

“I can’t emphasise enough how dangerous this is. It’s happening worryingly often and it needs to be stopped before someone is badly injured, or worse.”

Anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously should call police via the non-emergency number 101.
