Fundraising friends Richard Baker and Steve Johnson are holding a family fun day as they prepare to tackle the London Marathon.

The duo hope the event at Gilersome Sports Club on Saturday will help them raise the money they need to take part in the race as runners for St John Ambulance and children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.

Richard, 42, and Steve, 35, both from Gildersome, are training up to four times a week to prepare for what will be their first full marathon.

Richard, a keen runner, said: “I have run half marathons before but this is my first proper full run.

“I caught the running bug after trying out things like, Yorkshire Warrior and Tough Mudder then I decided to run another, then another.”

The chosen charities are close to both runner’s hearts as they have received help from St John Ambulance workers while running.

Richard said: “We chose those charities because they have both either helped us or people we know.

“Candlelighters are helping my friend with a child who is ill, so we want to raise as much money as we can.”

The fun day is free to attend and will include plenty of family friendly activities for you to enjoy.

There will be a bouncy castle, sports events and many different stalls, including one offering barbecue food, at Gildersome Sports Club from 2pm.

Raffle tickets will be on sale and there will be an auction with a whole host of prizes including a mini break, a signed rugby shirt and two Yorkshire cricket county match tickets.

Popular local band Mainline will be performing at 8pm.
