A planning application to expand a travellers site in Gildersome has been granted.

Leeds City Council applied for a further 12 pitches, amenity buildings, parking and landscaping to its Cottingley Springs Travellers Site, despite opposition from local people and councillors who say the site is large enough already.

The planning officer, asked to review the plans, recommended that the application be approved and planning chiefs agreed at a meeting held yesterday.

Coun Robert Finnigan, who has led the campaign against the expansion, said: “We are significantly disappointed with the decision, but pleased that the matter has been deferred to the Secretary of State who could overturn the decision and refuse the application.”
