Expansion in pipeline for Morley Town Council
Morley Town Council could be expanded to include Tingley and Ardsley if those communities support a new proposal being put forward.
Leeds City Council is to undertake a review of the way all town and parish councils are organised, which could see the Morley bounderies being stretched.
Areas such as West and East Ardsley were covered by the old Morley Borough Council but are not in the area covered by Morley Town Council, which encompasses Morley and Churwell.
Morley town councillor Robert Finnigan said he would support any review.
“I have spoken to many residents in areas not covered by the town council who want to know if their areas can be covered. This review gives them the chance to join the town council if they wish,” he said.
Morley Town Council pays for extra policing in the town council area and is also a statutory consultee for planning matters.
It also supports local community groups with grants and delivers additional local services such as a clean up teams via Community Payback and additional gritting during bad weather.
Leader of the council Tom Leadley said “Most people see the town Council as a positive thing and it contributes towards a feeling of community cohesion. Other communities across the Greater Morley area seem keen to be part of this and the review will give them the option to join us.”
The review, which was due to be discussed at Leeds City Council’s General Purposes Committee meeting will look at all issues relating to parish and town councils, including the size of wards, their sustainability and whether they should be expanded or downsized.
