A young slimmer from Morley has been crowned as West Yorkshire’s slimmer of the year after dropping six dress sizes.
Fiona Platt, 25, became “addicted” to unhealthy snacking when she started university.
The event management graduate said: “It was the first time in my life I’d eaten away from home so I would snack on processed foods and drink a lot. I became withdrawn and felt that I didn’t deserve to go out.”
The emotional stress of gaining weight and uncontrollable eating began to take it’s toll on Fiona.
“I’d go to the White Rose Shopping Centre and I couldn’t find clothes to fit.”
She became envious of what her friends were wearing but put on a front as she didn’t want to tell anyone how she was feeling.
“I was always big as a child and I became the fat jolly person but inside it was eating me up.”
After nasty comments from men in nightclubs, Fiona stopped socialising as much and lost her confidence.
“I was constantly thinking about food,” she said.
For five years, Fiona said that she never felt hunger pangs as she would always be eating.
“If I was stressed I’d eat, if I was sad, I’d eat and if I was celebrating, I’d eat. I’d convince myself that I deserved that burger.”
Fiona was desperate to make a change so with the support of her boyfriend and family she went to Morley’s Slimming World at the Salvation Army on Ackroyd Street.
“It was my third attempt at going when I actually went into the meeting because I was so nervous and didn’t want to face up to my problems.”
Jayne Broadbent who runs the group, welcomed Fiona putting her nerves at ease.
Fiona had been avoiding the scales until her first session. She said: “Jayne was so fantastic and really motivated me.”
Fiona, who lives at home with her parents, was joined by her mum and dad on the new healthy eating regime for the first week which helped her lose nine-and-a-half half pounds.
“I couldn’t believe it, it really spurred me on,” she said.
Fiona continued to cut down on fat and processed food whilst never going hungry. Replacing mince with Quorn or lean meat as well as preparing healthy snacks to take with her.
“For me it’s about forward planning and keeping healthy,” she said.
Fiona’s dedication led to her loosing a whopping three stone in her first year at Slimming World.
“My goal was to reach a size 16 as I was going to be a bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding and the dresses only went up to a size 16.”
But by the time the wedding came around Fiona was a svelte size 14, hitting her first mile stone.
After the wedding, Fiona’s next step was to get exercising.
“I went to Morley Leisure Centre for a few hours week and now I exercise eight hours a week.”
Within a year, Fiona had lost another three-and-a-half stone, reaching her ideal weight.
“I am now a size 10 and just feel happy with how I am,” she said.
After a total weight loss of six and a half stone, Fiona won the West Yorkshire district slimmer of the year award with her inspiring story.
Fiona who was crowned the champion of the area earlier this month said: “It was amazing, I just couldn’t believe it when they announced my name. It was a whirlwind!”
And that’s not all for Fiona as she will go to the national finals in Derby to face other finalists across the country.
But whatever the outcome, Fiona is already a winner after her weight-loss has given her the confidence to start a new bridal gown business which is going from strength to strength. Fiona said that she remains motivated by attending her regular Slimming World group.
