Flytipper caught in council trap

TRAPPED: Waste collected by Greenwood.

A TINGLEY man has been fined £1,000 for flytipping after being trapped by council officials.

Anthony Greenwood, of Dewsbury Road, pleaded guilty at Wakefield Magistrates’ Court to three charges.

One of knowingly causing or permitting the deposit of controlled waste at Lawns Lane, Lofthouse, and two of failing to provide waste transfer notices in respect of waste taken from East Garforth Primary School and when transferring waste he had collected from Flanshaw Crescent to someone else to dispose of.

The court heard that in January a Wakefield Council officer on patrol found rubbish fly-tipped at Lawns Lane, Lofthouse, with labels linking the rubbish to a primary school.

The environmental crime officer established that three men in a white van had been allowed to collect rubbish from the school after convincing the school they were a registered waste carrier.

A sting operation was mounted at a council-owned house in Wakefield where a location device was fitted into a pile of waste outside the property and Greenwood, the contact that took the waste from the school, was called to give a price on removing the rubbish.

Later that day, three men attended the address and agreed a price of £60 to remove the waste. The vehicle that took the waste away was found to be insured to Greenwood.

During a council interview, Greenwood admitted taking the waste from the school and said he had arranged for a man to come and take the waste away from his home.

He was fined £500 with a £15 victim surcharge and a £521.90 costs in respect of the first offence. The magistrates gave him credit for his early guilty plea.

Anyone employing a waste carrier to remove and dispose of waste should always check that they are licensed by the Environment Agency. Authenticity can be checked by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506.
