Friends brave the pain for charity
GOOD SPIRIT: Marc and Tom after their charity swim are now preparing for their next painful challenge. (NS)
YOU would usually find two friends cheering on each other to come out on top - but not for this pair who are competing against each other, all in the name of charity.
Marc Wilkinson and Tom Prendergast are spending 12 months competing against each other in series of challenges, each wanting to be crowned the best and overall winner - and leave the other weeping at their defeat.
The pair, who have been good friends for four years are raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity that means a lot to them both as Tom’s grandmother is suffering from dementia, so they know first hand how the condition affects a person and the people around them.
The pair have already took to the water for an indurance swimming race at a lake in Suffolk and their next challenge will be held on September 15 at the Cross Keys Pub, Morley. And it will probably be the most painful money they have ever made - it’s paintball chicken.
Pharmacist Marc, from Morley, said: “Basically we will stand there in our underwear, while people give a donation to fire a paintball at us. The one who can cope with it the longest will be the winner.”
Marc and Tom, who is a marketing data executive for Bupa, hope their pain will raise £1,000 for the charity and their target on the night may well be reached thanks the paintball auction and more fundraising throughout the evening, which starts at 5.30pm.
There will also be live music from band Twist of Fate.
The duo will then have some time to tend to their bruises before taking on challenge number three - Tough Mudder, a gruelling 11-mile military style assault course.
Challenge four is called Survivor Stand Off - who can stand and face their demons for the longest - challenge five is a mystery challenge, which has been left in the hands of the public, challenge six is a coast-to-coast cycle, a 140-mile bike race from the west to east coast of Britain.
Finally, challenge seven will be the London Marathon.
Whoever wins each event gets a point with them totted up in May next year, when all the challenges are over, to see who will be celebrating and who will be licking their wounds.
Everyone is invited along to the Cross Keys pub on September 15 and anyone wanting to know more, or donate, can visit Marc and Tom’s Justgiving site at www.justgiving.com/Tom versusmarc
There will also be collections at the events.
