Fundraising doctor Kate Granger is preparing for her next big challenge - swimming the equivalent length of the English Channel.

For Kate, 31, it’s just the latest in a line of fundraising ventures to meet her target of £50,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre in Leeds.

Kate, who works as a doctor at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, is herself suffering from terminal cancer having been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of sarcoma two years ago.

Having taken the decision to stop the chemotherapy that was making her quality of life deteriorate, she got to work preparing a ‘bucket list’ of things she wanted to do before she died.

But top of her list was her fundraising - although she has almost reached her final target before the swim even begins.

“The power of Twitter!” Kate said. “But I’m not going to stop, I’m just going to set a higher target. My husband Chris thinks it should be £75,000 but I’m thinking £100,000.”

She has also already beaten her target for the sponsored swim. She was hoping to raise £3,000 but £3,500 has already been pledged.

She will begin the daily swims at Morley Leisure Centre on June 1 and hopes to be finished by the end of the month.

Kate is also finding time to work on her third book, the latest in a series aimed at helping fellow medical professionals understand how cancer patients feel emotionally.

“The last book went really well, it sold about 3,500 copies altogether,” she said.

She is also doing regular bake sales at the Bexley Wing at St James’s Hospital which raise up to £700 a time.

And on top of all that she has just managed to fit in one of the last remaining items on her bucket list - a trip to Amsterdam to visit Anne Frank’s house.
