Meet the Gildersome undertaker ‘urning’ respect on the slopes!

A funeral director’s clients were taken aback when they discovered he was something of a daredevil.

Observer and Advertiser reader Margaret Bye got in touch after hearing about Peter Crabtree’s thrill-seeking hobby, which is in stark contrast to his more sombre day job.

When running Crabtree and Son Funeral Directors isn’t keeping him busy, undertaker Peter Crabtree loves nothing more than to disappear into the mountains for a spot of snowboarding.

“Being a funeral director is stressful so I find getting away for a week in the mountains is the best way of recharging my batteries,” he said.

Peter, who runs the Gildersome funeral home, has enjoyed skiing on the slopes with his parents since he was six.

But it wasn’t until a season working has a chalet maid in France in 2001 that he fell in love with snowboarding.

He said: “It is very different from being a funeral director, but I enjoy both my work and getting out to the mountains once a year. I find the sport relaxing and exhilarating at the same time, and luckily I’ve not yet broken any bones!”

Each year he joins like-minded snowboarders around the country on visits to different resorts around the world.

His hobby has taken him out on the slopes in Canada, Switzerland and France so far.

The 38-year-old has recently returned from a trip, but said he was still some way off the level seen by spectators at the Winter Olympics.

He said: “I’m afraid I don’t go quite as fast as some of the Olympians, but I would prefer to be doing it rather than watching.”
