Morley bin collections set to be back on track

LEEDS City Council has said refuse collectors are making every effort to get bin collections back on track after recent bad weather stalled them.

With around half a million bins to collect each week, services were disrupted by the recent snow but additional staff have been out to pick up as many bins as possible throughout the week.

Once-a-month green bin collections are still being prioritised so people can continue to recycle as much as possible and it is expected that the majority of these recycling collections will have been picked up by today (Thursday).

The council said the crews were also “making great headway” in collecting black bins normally scheduled for a weekday collection. From today all spare resources will be focused on collecting black bin waste.

However due to the amount of waste to be picked up, collections for the remainder of the week, especially Saturday, are likely to remain affected.

Residents who normally have their black bin emptied on a Saturday are being asked to put their bin out as usual this weekend. If bins haven’t been emptied by 5pm on Saturday residents should leave them out and refuse collectors will attempt to collect them on Sunday.

It is expected that collections will return to normal from Monday.

Coun Mark Dobson, executive member for the environment said: “I’d like to commend staff for their efforts to keep bin collections on schedule despite the disruption caused by the weather.

“I’d also like to reassure everyone that all available resources are being targeted at getting things back to normal.

“I’m sure people will understand that we’re not going to send out 26 tonne trucks in deep snow when they could cause serious damage to life, limb or property. We’re grateful to residents for bearing with us while we catch up.”

Household waste sorting sites are open to take any extra waste.

Information about waste services can be found on the council’s website.
