CHANGES AHEAD Coun Robert Finnigan.

A local councillor is warning people to prepare for changes when Universal Credit is rolled out.

Morley town councillor Robert Finnigan said that most people were not aware that changes were on the way.

Coun Finnigan, who works as a welfare rights worker in Kirklees, said: “The problems with Universal Credit is that it’s digital by default, which means you can only claim online so people with language problems or who are not computer literate will struggle.”

He said claimant’s rent money used to go directly to their landlord, so the temptation may be to spend it on other things.

But he said: “The upside is that it will make work pay more so will encourage people off benefits and into work. and will be a universal benefit so you claim it regardless of whether you are working, unemployed or on the sick.”
