Morley firefighter Jez to take on Boston Marathon
Firefighter Jez Hughes who is running the Boston Marathon in April for the Firefighters Charity.
Morley firefighter Jez Hughes will be swapping his boots for running shoes this April as he heads to America to compete in the Boston Marathon.
Keen runner Jez qualified for the event, the oldest marathon in the world, with a time of three hours and 21 minutes in Belfast last May.
He will be running on April 14 for The Fire Fighters Charity, who helped him recover after a cartilage injury in 2010.
Despite being advised to give up running, Jez had rehabilitation at the charity’s Penrith facilities and has since completed the Belfast and Dublin marathons. Next, he plans to attempt the Iron Man challenge.
He said: “The physio I went through in Penrith was without a doubt how I got back running, that and determination.
“The whole purpose of why I’m doing this is nothing to do with ego. A quarter of the money will be going towards gym equipment for Morley Fire Station, the rest to the charity.
“The race is one of the hardest in the USA, but it will be a great experience and will definitely be worth it.”
