A Morley fitness fanatic is planning to cycle 270 miles both ways across the Pennines to raise money for a cancer charity.
Shane Briggs, 42, is hoping to raise £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK when he takes to the road on August 30. He will ride all the way from Bridlington to Blackpool before he is picked up by a van and transported to Liverpool Canal, from where he will complete the marathon trek as he finishes at Morley Town Hall.
The only break Shane will enjoy during the ride will be when he is in the van and he says he is aiming to complete the course as “quickly as he possibly can.”
And for Shane and his proud wife Donna, the effort is a deeply personal one. Shane’s uncle was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year, while Donna tragically lost her first husband to the disease.
Donna, 39, said: “Shane’s very good at keeping active and every year he looks to do something for charity. He’s out on his bike most weekends.
“It’s a cause that’s close to both of our hearts and if we can make people aware of what he’s doing then we’re hopeful we can hit our target.”
Shane, who has one son and three stepchildren, said: “People keep telling me I’m mad to do this. I know it’s going to be one hell of a challenge but I’m looking forward to it. I’m trying to raise awareness because I don’t think it gets that much publicity so people maybe don’t realise how serious it is.”
