Morley misses out on Tour de France honour
Latest news...
ANNOUNCEMENTS today revealed that Morley has missed out being part of the Yorkshire route of the world’s most famous cycling event - the Tour de France.
Following the news that Yorkshire won the bid to host the Grand Depart, Morley councillors requested for the town to be included on the route, hoping that the community spirit and rich cycling heritage would ensure the town was seriously considered.
However, it was announced today that the route will instead see the world’s leading cyclists line up outside Leeds Town Hall, passing through Harewood, Otley and Ilkley before heading through the Yorkshire Dales and finishing in Harrogate.
Leader of Leeds City Council Keith Wakefield said: “As a city we are absolutely thrilled to be hosting the start of the world’s largest annual sporting event in 2014, and speaking personally as an avid fan of the Tour de France and keen cyclist for over 25 years, I am incredibly proud and excited that Leeds has been given the honour of starting this amazing and legendary race.”
The Tour de France opening stage will begin outside Leeds’ historic town hall on July 5, 2014.
