MOTORISTS breaking the 20mph speed limit on Fountain Street have been warned that police will soon start issuing fines.

Following complaints by residents that drivers are still going too fast down the road that has two schools on it, officers took SID, their Speed Indicator Device, down to monitor the zone.

The equipment is not used for prosecutions but aims to alert drivers to the fact they are going too fast.

Insp Paul Sullivan, of Morley Neighbourhood Policing team, said: “We have been up there with SID. There is a problem and we can only warn people so many times before we move to enforcement.

“We don’t wait till someone gets run over so we are switching to enforcement action with the laser guns now.”

Those caught speeding will be issued with a £60 fine and given three penalty points on their licence.

Insp Sullivan said: “In the current climate you would have thought people would really appreciate a warning rather than a £60 fine which, for some people, is an electricity or gas bill or a good chunk of their food bill.

“That is why we did try to give warnings but there comes a stage when public safety has to take precedence.”

He added that anyone who fails to tell their insurance company about penalty points on their licence could find their insurance is invalidated in the event of an accident, leaving them with a potentially massive bill.

l PARENTS dropping off and collecting children from Woodkirk Academy have been warned to obey the highway code and not obstruct driveways.

Insp Sullivan said: “There is a parking problem on Rein Road with parents blocking driveways and so we have been doing work down there but you can only warn or give people a ticking off so many times before you have to start getting your pen out and issuing penalties.

“Blocking a driveway is a criminal offence and police can issue fines and even get cars towed away.

“It is much easier to park your car further down the road where it is not an obstruction.”
