Morley offenders pay up £20,000 to avoid Christmas in jail

PAY your fines or be banged up for Christmas – that was the message from Morley Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT).

Operation Scrooge was a planned partnership with Leeds Magistrates Court, organised by Morley police Insp Paul Sullivan.

Officers sent letters to people wanted for non-payment of fines, giving them the opportunity to pay up by going to Morley Police Station last Wednesday to settle the fine and avoid being arrested before Christmas Day.

Insp Sullivan said: “We set up a court administration desk and had six officers from the Civilian Enforcement Team join us for the day.

“The Morley desk was staffed by CEOs Anne Prince and Janet Dear whilst the remainder of the team assisted the management of offenders.”

Before the operation, outstanding warrants totalled £21,972, most of which was unpaid compensation to victims of crime.

During the day, more than 90 people surrendered themselves at the station and a total of £8,302 was recovered.

Insp Sullivan said: “I am absolutely delighted with the result. We gave people who owed money to the courts one last chance before Christmas enforcement to come in and settle their debts to the courts.

“This simply means that 90 people avoided spending Christmas in custody and the majority of the cash paid will now find its way to victims of crime as compensation.”
