Morley patient in cancer world first
PIONEERING TREATMENT: Richard Garratt, Margaret Johnson and lead research radiographer Alan Needham and David Paynter.
A Morley woman has become the first person in the world to benefit from a new radiotherapy treatment.
Margaret Johnson, who is suffering from lung cancer, was given the Flattening Filter Free (FFF) procedure at St James’ Hospital in Leeds.
It delivers a highly concentrated dose of radiation to the affected area up to six times quicker than the existing method, and the procedure took just two minutes.
Mrs Johnson, 86, said: “I wasn’t looking forward to the treatment but it has been a very pleasant surprise for it to be so quick and painless.
“All the staff have been very reassuring and put me at my ease.”
The new treatment was used on Mrs Johnson after her doctors decided a conventional operation was unsuitable.
Lead research radiographer Alan Needham said: “Being able to deliver complex treatments in such a short time will make these techniques even safer than before.
“As well as minimising risk, it is a much better experience for the patient”.
