Morley pensioner’s battle against the litterbugs

A Morley pensioner fed up with litterbugs leaving empty crisp packets and other rubbish near the town’s community garden is appealing for a bin to be installed at the site.

Dennis Marshall, 82, lives on Bank Street and last year spent hundreds of pounds turning the scruffy corner of his road into a beautiful community garden packed with flowers.

But now he says schoolchildren using the steps of nearby Liberty House are dropping litter, turning the spot he spent so much of his time and money renovating in to an eyesore.

Mr Marshall said: “Every Monday morning I go out with a black bag to collect the crisp packets and other rubbish dumped there, and I’m getting a bit past it now.

“This is right next to where my garden is, people just drop their litter and it makes the place look unsightly.

“I shouldn’t be doing this, the council should, but I’ve been doing it for longer than I care to remember.”

Mr Marshall claims that despite contacting the town and city council many times, he has been told nothing can be done to help him.

He said: “I’ve emailed the council, telephoned them and last time I talked to them they said it wasn’t an urgent matter and there was no funding for it.

“I’ve spent hundreds of pounds on this garden and I can’t even get a bin to put the rubbish in.

“I don’t know if they would even put the rubbish in the bin but it would be a start.

“It seems unfair, all I’m trying to do is get a bin.”

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said: “At the moment, there is no funding to provide additional litter bins.

“Mr Marshall’s request for a new bin will be logged and when additional funding becomes available, his request will be considered.”
