Morley set for Christmas lights switch on
THERE will be a Harry Potter theme at the switch-on of the Morley Christmas lights tomorrow night (Thursday, November 24).
Children are encouraged to dress up in their best magical costumes for the family friendly event that starts at 5pm.
Morley town councillors have organised this year’s event after the usual organisers, Leeds City Council, backed out due to spending cuts.
One of the main organisers, Coun Joyce Sanders said: “This year’s event is not for pop stars or celebrities, which is how it always was when it was organised by Leeds, it is more for children and families.”
There will be chestnuts roasting, stalls and street entertainment, including free donkey rides, from 5pm.
Many of the cafes and shops will be opening late, providing a warm place to go if the weather is bad.
The stage show will begin at 6pm with music from Andrew’s Disco, carol singing by local singers Jamie Leigh Fish and Gemma Hopton and appearances by Harry Potter and Prof McGonnagal lookalikes.
Santa and his elf will of course be there, giving out sweets to good children and collecting their Christmas letters.
The event will come to its climax at 7pm with the switching on of the Christmas lights and the now traditional firework display.
