Morley set for fortnightly bin collections?
MORLEY and Ardsley could be two of the first areas to lose weekly bin collections as part of a pilot scheme by Leeds City Council.
An analysis of the city’s recycling and rubbish rates found Ardsley, Morley North and Morley South were three of 10 wards the most ‘suitable’ for fortnightly collections.
A meeting of the Safer and Stronger Communities Scrutiny Board on Monday heard that these wards already did the best in terms of how much they recycle and how much they keep out of their black bins.
But architects of the initiative have not yet fully decided whether to trial the scheme in the 10 most suitable wards, which are scattered across the south, south east and north west of the city, or to launch the changes in one geographical corner.
Coun Mark Dobson, executive member of Leeds City Council with responsibility for environmental services, said: “We have a logistical job to decide whether we want to take a fragmented approach to (the pilot) or introduce it in one big wedge of the city, One thing we have learned is not to rush our decision.”
From next February the council plans to roll out an ‘alternate week’ black and green bin service to 40,000 homes.
If the pilot is successful the changes will be introduced to 80 per cent of all homes in Leeds by 2014-15.
On a monthly cycle it would mean the average householder would go from having four black bin collections and one green bin collection to two of teach.
Coun Dobson said that primarily the aim was to reduce landfill and save money.
The council is forecasted to spend £16 million in landfill tax in the next 12 months
