Respects were paid to fallen Morley soldier David Kirkness as Riflemen from Wakefield paraded through the city.
Lance Cpl Kirkness was tragically killed in Afghanistan in December 2009, just four days after his 24th birthday, as he tried to stop a Taliban suicide bomb attack.
His family were in attendance as 3rd Battalion The Rifles marched through Wakefield with bugles sounding and bands playing.
Yorkshire soldiers who died in both World Wars as well as in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts were remembered during the ceremony, which was attended by thousands of people.
Major Mark Melhorn, the Officer Commanding ‘B’ Company 3 Rifles, said: “We have a lot of soldiers, proud Yorkshire men who come from this area and today means a great deal to them personally, and obviously a great deal to the Battalion and the Rifles as well.
“A number of local soldiers within the Company are swelled with pride today. It has been fantastic for them to come home and receive a great welcome from the people of the city of Wakefield.”
