Pancake bell rings out in Morley

Members of St Mary’s in the Wood Church continued a tradition going back hundreds of years when they took turns to ring a pancake bell this morning.
It is thought Morley’s pancake bell has been rung on Shrove Tuesday since the 1640s to signal the start of Lent and involved ringing a bell which was lost in the fire that gutted the old St Mary’s In The Wood church in June 2009.
Since then the church congregation has improvised with a hand bell.
Members of the church welcomed visitors who stood on the steps to watch this year’s bell being rung.
