A plea has been made to drivers parking inconsiderately outside a primary school after a toddler was hit by a car.

The three-year-old boy ran out from Drighlington Primary School at around 3.15pm last Wednesday.

He was hit by the car in Moorland Road, but suffered only minor injuries.

Headteacher Sue Jackson said they were relieved to discover his injuries were not more serious. She said: “The child ran out into the road and thankfully the driver was driving with caution.

“We are working with a range of professionals including the police and parish council to try to find ways in which we can avoid this happening again.”

Insp Paul Sullivan, who leads Morley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said the driver’s low speed stopped the boy being more seriously hurt.

He urged any drivers visiting the school and nearby area to think before they park.

“We have been really worried about a child being knocked down and it’s for fortune of circumstance we were not dealing with a fatality here,” he said.

Local resident Fred Ashworth also expressed his concern over parking issues after Wednesday’s accident.

Mr Ashworth said: “The inevitable has happened when a child was knocked down outside the school.

“We have constantly, every day, irresponsible parking by parents dropping off and collecting children from the school, often making it extremely difficult to drive up and down the street.

“It also would be impossible for any emergency vehicles to get up the street while cars are parked as they do every day.

“A sign has been placed at the school entrance, but it is ignored daily. It is about time something is done to deter this happening again.”
