Rain keeps off for historic horse fair

Lee Fair, West Ardsley

Lee Fair, West Ardsley

HUNDREDS flocked to West Ardsley on Friday for First of Lee, the country’s oldest chartered fair.

Horses, ponies and foals were put through their paces, bought and sold alongside equestrian equipment, crafts and clothes.

The horse fair is held twice a year on fields off Baghill Road in the parish of Woodkirk.

It is thought a fair has been held in the area since Viking times but the legal right for it to be held dates back to 1136 when King Stephen granted a charter to monks at Woodkirk.

Latter Lee, the second installment of the fair, will be held on September 17.
