A TINGLEY childminder is getting her skates on this Sunday to raise money for a charity very close to her heart.

Samantha Briggs, 41, has not only lost her mum, grandad and great-aunt to cancer but even herself has battled a brain tumour 10 years ago.

Now, to help others fight the disease, she is taking on the Goodwill Roller Marathon, skating 26 miles to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Samantha said: “I have chosen this charity partly because this form of cancer has claimed the life of my mother at the age of 57 in 1997, her father and his sister.

“My mum was diagnosed when she was 43 and didn’t live to see my marriage or the birth of her two grandchildren, which she had longed for.

“Then in 2001, just one month after the birth of my second child, I too was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I was 31 years old at the time and my first child was just two.”

Samantha had surgery in September 2001 to remove two thirds of the tumour and has annual MRI scans to monitor the small amount that still remains.

She said: “I am happy to say I am fit and healthy and after nearly 10 years now living with the tumour I can live a normal active life. My outlook is to remain as positive and as active as possible.”

Samantha says she now wants to raise as much money as she can to help everyone currently living with the condition before it’s too late for them and hopes the marathon will do just that.

She said: “I am doing the full 26 miles and hope to complete it in two hours and 10 minutes. I have been training on the streets of Tingley and I’m on course to make my target.”

Roller skating is a big part of Samantha’s life, skating with Hot Wheel Roller Derby, which has around 40 members from all over West Yorkshire.

On Sunday, she, along with some of her team mates, will join around 1,000 others in the marathon at Goodwill Racing Track in West Sussex. Anyone wanting to sponsor Samantha to help Brain Tumour Research can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/Samantha-Briggs0
