Sainsbury’s customers help tackle food poverty

SUPERMARKET customers are being encouraged to help tackle food poverty this month by taking part in a food drive.

The project, run by Sainsbury’s and FareShare, a national charity tackling hunger across the UK, will be holding its second annual Million Meal Appeal this Saturday and Sunday which will benefit more than 700 charities and projects across the UK.

Last year’s appeal was a huge success and involved over 600 Sainsbury’s stores, including the one in the White Rose Shopping Centre.

Thanks to customers’ generosity, together with Sainsbury’s pledge to match items donated, FareShare could deliver food for over 1.2 million meals to 700 charities and community projects it
supports.

Morley’s contribution was significant, with enough food collected at the White Rose Centre to provide 2,000 meals to charities across the UK.

Customers will again be able to choose to donate an item from the appeal shopping list which consists of long-life products including tinned goods, dried pasta, pasta sauce, rice, tea and instant
coffee.

The items are purchased as normal and then placed in the collection box after the checkouts. Customers shopping at Sainsbury’s Online can also choose to make a £1 donation between October 3 and October 9.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to help the scheme run smoothly at the White Rose store can go to www.fareshare.org.uk to register.
