The number of families in need has doubled since last year but Christmas cheer is on the rise thanks to a local charity.

The Salvation Army on Ackroyd Street in Morley has been appealing to local people and businesses to donate presents and money to help deliver some hope to vulnerable people.

Captain Tracy Harrison said that the charity aims to help those who don’t have a lot.

“We want to bump up their Christmas by adding toys and food to many households,” she said.

This week Tracy and staff, went to pick up a special donation from Hermes, formerly ParcelNet, in Capitol Park after the company collected £250 of donations, lots of food parcels and many gifts.

Tracy said: “It’s lovely that people like Hermes have collected toys to help.”

She added that she was surprised by the wide range of gifts.

“I am overwhelmed by the support,” said Tracy who also thanked local churches for their generosity.
