A school girl has launched her own battle against developers who are wanting to build on a nature spot opposite her home.
Eleanor Hudson, 14, of Haigh Moor Road, West Ardsley, was upset at the news that developers were planning to build 13 homes at the site next to Ardsley Reservoir.
Mum Beverley said: “All of her life she has had a beautiful view across fields and the reservoir out of her bedroom window, which has meant a lot to her and the thought of that disappearing spurred her into action.”
Nature-loving Eleanor, a Year 10 pupil at Woodkirk Academy, decided to start a petition, urging people to sign.
Beverley said: “She went out and got lots of signatures.
“In all of her spare time she has gone out in the freezing cold, catching people to sign.”
With the deadline for objections being January 27, Eleanor managed to get 237 people to sign to petition.
“There’s been lots of support,” Beverley said. “It’s a bit of a beauty spot and gets hundreds of visitors each week, especially in the summer.
“We’re shocked and disgusted that it can be taken away just like that.
“It’s a small piece of land, but significant to so many people.
“I don’t think she realises just how well she has done.
“She just thought a point needed to be made and has made it.
“When she started there were less than a dozen online objections and now there’s about 60.”
Beverly said: “She’s raised awareness if nothing else and it’s a credit to her.
“I admire her so much.”
