Snow latest: Morley schools closed and travel updates
Latest news...
Travellers are battling the weather again as the latest flurry of snowfall has brought problems for travellers and the closure of schools.
Forecasters are predicting snow in Leeds and the rest of Yorkshire throughout today and Saturday.
Accumulations of around 5cm are expected at lower levels, with up to 10cm on higher ground.
East Ardsley Primary, Seven Hills, Morley Victoria and Fountain Primary are all closed this morning.
There has been widespread disruption on the buses with some services missing some roads.
Train services are running as normal, although there are some delays.
John Lee, from the MeteoGroup weather organisation, said: “Unfortunately the snow doesn’t seem to want to go away quickly. There will also be a strong easterly wind so it will feel bitterly cold. And once you get snow, that means there is a risk of drifting and blizzards.”
The Met Office yesterday issued a weather warning for Yorkshire, adding there was potential for “significant disruption” to transport and power supplies.
Experts from the AA also warned motorists that routine journeys could prove hazardous. Darron Burness, the AA’s head of special operations, said: “It’s going to be a real witch’s brew of driving wind, rain and snow, which will inevitably cause disruption on the roads. Drivers should be well prepared as even short journeys can quickly turn bad.”
Travellers were told to expect delays at Leeds Bradford Airport.
Passengers were being advised to contact their airline or tour operator to check the status of their flight before getting to the airport
