UNIVERSITY students descended on Morley town centre as part of a competition to redevelop Windsor Court.
Second year architect students from Huddersfield University were welcomed to Morley last week as part of an Artspace project challenging them to design a meeting space and entertainment hub in Windsor Court.
Around 70 students have been asked to design something for the town that will be a permanent fixture and transform Windsor Court into a more friendly space where the town can host various events under a covered area.
Project manager Rachael Kennedy said: “The redevelopment of Windsor Court which has adopted the working title Artspace would be a positive move for Morley, to capitalise on the pro-active events calendar we have in the town but also to provide a central outdoor space for entertainment, to socialise and to celebrate.”
Coun Judith Elliott, who is chairwoman of the Diamond Jubilee Committee, who commissioned the project, said: “The Diamond Jubilee Committee wanted to have a lasting remembrance of the wonderful year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.
“With what we propose, Morleians and visitors will have an immediate and interesting reminder for years to come of a unique event in our time.
“The proposed Artspace will be available for schools, art groups, performances, music, photography, the list of possibilities is endless. This will in turn bring interest into the town, and by doing so hopefully increase the footfall into Morley, and add to our already wonderful heritage. In all, another exciting venture for Morley.”
