THE sun came out on Monday in time to help ensure the Gildersome Community Jubilee Garden Party at the sports club was a “massive success”.

Organiser Eve Griffiths said: “Everything went smoothly and people turned out in their thousands, people from Gildersome, Morley and Leeds joined in the fun on the day.

“Our bouncy castle, face painting and coloured hair spraying were very popular for the children while the adults had a great time at the Pimms tent!

“The sunshine on the day was a big bonus for us without it everything could have gone very differently.”

The Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Major Ashley Rawlins presented Gildersome Sports Club with a plaque commemorating the Jubilee and helped judge the children’s portrait competition.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle and her consort Mr Graham Castle, also attended, browsing stalls, watching exhibition matches in the arena and judging the baking competition.

During the day Gildersome cricket teams and Gildersome Spurs under seven’s football teams performed exhibition matches and there were fun races for all the children.

The event was rounded off with a big sing song, everyone joining in singing Jerusalem.

“Overall it was a fantastic event and the planning and stressing over the past two and a half months seemed to be really worth it,” said Mrs Griffiths.

She added: “We have a lot of people to thank, and the biggest thank you needs to go to Bruntcliffe High School, Morley they provided tables, chairs, gazebos, people without them we wouldn’t have had a party.

“Other thank yous need to go out to stall holders for helping to make our event a success on the day, Gildersome Scouts, Krispy Kreme, The Barista, Sweetilicious, Tasty! and so many more.

“The companies that donated raffle prizes need a thank you, Yorkshire Cricket team, Leeds Utd football club, Leeds Rhinos (Leeds Rugby), Frankie and Bennys, DW Sports, Elamis, Bella Italia, Pizza Hut, Nandos, La Belle(Gildersome) and the Yorkshire Hamper Co. and thank you to ASDA Morley that helped us with a donation to dress up our street party area.”
